Goya at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Zaragoza. Aragonen.

This museum has been declared a National Monument in 1962.

In it we can find the following works by Goya:

Carlos IV and María de Luisa de Parma, both oil on canvas of dimensions 152 x 110 cm. and painted in 1789, good exponent of Goya as a chamber painter of the Spanish kings.

Fernando VII, with the royal insignia, full body turned to the right (280 x 125 cm.), is the representation of a monarch who identifies his person with the institution, which justifies the power that his person holds.
The theatrical stance and the ostentatious clothes suppose a propagandistic intentionality, a search of prestige of who orders the work. Goya is reluctant to succumb to this false ruling.
Special mention deserves the play of lights through which highlights the red layer on a dark background.
It is owned by the Canal Imperial de Aragon.

Fernando VII painted by Goya

Full-length portrait of Jose Miguel de Carvajal y Vargas, Duke of San Carlos (280 x 125 cm), painted in 1815.
The brushstroke is short and dense, and sometimes very loose, as in the belt.
It is in works like this, for which Goya is considered a precursor of later currents.

Portrait of Lady with Mantilla (61 x 51 cm.), painted in 1815-24.
It is a bust portrait of a lady with a majestic air and deep gaze.

Head of man with hat (32 x 53 cm.), Painted in 1774-75. This work is only awarded to "Aragonese School", although this canvas has been repeatedly considered as a self-portrait of Goya.

The Dream of St. Joseph (130 x 95.5 cm.), Painted in 1771.
St. Joseph sleeps and an archangel gives him the news of the state of the Virgin Mary.
The death of San Francisco Javier (78 x 52 cm.), Painted in 1775-80.
It emphasizes the dying face, constituted with decided brushes that endow it with powerful expressiveness, like the hands enjarciadas on the crucifix.
The Virgin of the Pillar in glory (78 x 52 cm.), Painted in 1775-80.
It presents a glory of the Virgin surrounded by angels. It is surrounded by flying cherubs and in the lower part three angels hold it.
San Luis Gonzaga meditating in his studio before a crucifix (261 x 160 cm.), Painted in 1781-85.
In this painting composition and symbolism are combined.
The saint looks at the Christ who wields it, but holds it by wrapping it in a white handkerchief that signifies purity and protection to the human touch.

About the graphic work, the Museum has very important funds. Goya frequently used the metallic plates in hollow (dry point, etching, aquatint and mezzotinta) and the lithography (flat on calcareous stone).

Los Caprichos: 80 etchings with aquatint and effects with burnisher. Made between 1792 and 1797.
The Disasters of War: 82 prints in etching-aquatint. Made from 1810 to 1820.
Bullfighting: highly evolved technique, richer and with more nuances than the others. Use aquatint and etching with a dry tip or burin. Two runs were made in 1816 of 33 prints and in 1876 of 8 prints that correspond to reverse of dies.
The Disparates or Proverbs: 22 pieces of etching-aquatint, made between 1820 and 1823.
Los Toros de Bordeaux: 4 originals for which Goya uses lithography, invented at the end of the 17th century. Made in 1825, they are published in the same year.
