Castle of Loarre
In its origin Loarre had an exclusively military function, within the defensive line that King Sancho el Mayor de Navarra established in his Aragonese territories.
It was also an outpost in front of the Muslim strongholds of Bolea and Ayerbe From this time dates the primitive nucleus of the castle, that includes the tower of the Homage, that of the queen and the church of Santa María; its construction would be carried out between 1.016 and 1.020, It is a work of Lombard architects and belongs to the first Romanesque style.
To this military function was added the religious with the reforms of the king Sancho Ramirez who founded here in 1,071 an abbey of canons of San Agustín. This was built in jaque Romanesque style, highlights the entrance door to the set (with a funerary inscription dated 1.096), the crypt and the church of San Pedro, with its slender dome and its interesting set of capitals.
After the advances of the reconquest the castle lost its military function and at its feet a town was formed, of which some foundations, tombs and the wall that protected it, built in the last decades of the thirteenth century, are preserved.
Today the village is on the plain, highlights the tower of his church dating from 1505. In this church the casket of San Demetrio, of Romanesque style and coming from the Castle, is conserved.
