The ROMANESQUE ART IN ARAGON: CINCO VILLAS.

In this area Romanesque art spread mainly from the 12th C. Being a frontier land, its buildings present quite often a structure adapted to the defensive or military function.

Luesia:


Medieval ensemble. Parish church of San Esteban and hermitage of the Virgin of Puyal, in the late Romanesque style.

Luna:


Church of San Gil, with carved capitals and decoration on the doorway; church of Santiago. Both are Monuments of Cultural Interest and date back to the 12th C.

El Frago:


Parish church of San Nicolás (end of the 12th C.). Door with a relief showing the Adoration and carved capitals.

 

Sos

Sos del Rey Católico.


It conserves the walled aspect of a fortress and a medieval colour. Sada Palace, where king Fernando was born, is now a museum. The church of San Esteban has a vaulted access gallery that could be closed in the case of an invasion. The crypt is from the 11th C.

VISITORS: The whole town is a Historic-Artistic Ensemble. Guide service available.

Uncastillo.


Monumental town. It has kept its Medieval organization in parishes with their correspondent churches. There are several 12th C. Romanesque churches: San Martín and Santa María (both with fortified towers), San Juan, San Lorenzo and San Felices. All of them have an structure of a single nave and a very articulated apse.

VISITORS: The town is a Historic-Artistic Ensemble. Guide service available.

Ejea de los Caballeros.


The capital of the area. The church of San Salvador keeps its original late Romanesque style in its North and East doors. Its famous tower belongs to the Gothic period. The whole building has a military structure.
