MUDEJAR ROUTES IN ARAGON: TERUEL
The city of Teruel, crossing point for roads and cultures, was declared World Artistic Patrimony by the UNESCO in 1986, due to its ensemble of great Mudejar monuments.
The ephemeral materials defied the passing of time and have given us the opportunity to enjoy them. Wrap yourself up in the decorations that adorn the landscape. Get captivated by its towers’ glazed ceramics, by its pottery that made possible the explosion of light and chromatism in Mudejar architecture. Unveil the Muslim hidden architecture. Discover the coffered ceiling of the cathedral, with Almohad Islamic influences, unique in Aragón. The magnificent Mudejar ensemble of the Cathedral and its coffered ceiling (12th century) can be visited from 11.30 to 14.00 and from 17.30 to 21.00. Inside, the Cathedral’s Museum has the same admission times.
The church of San Pedro in Teruel can be visited at worship times. Its decoration of crossed round arches is based on the preceding façade of the mosque in the Hudí palace of La Aljafería (the Hudí Muslim royal dinasty had Zaragoza as the capital of their realm. It was in that city that La Aljafería palace was built).
In the inside of San Pedro church you can visit the Mausoleum of Teruel’s Lovers.
Only the outside of the slender 14th century towers of San Martín, San Pedro and El Salvador can be enjoyed by the visitor.
