Aragon in English > Tourism > Monasteries
The monastic orders have been a key element in the history of Aragón as spiritual cohesive forces and because of their control over the economic activity of the areas around them. Aragonese monarchs, specially during the Middle Ages, made the monasteries become political instruments: as frontier enclaves against the enemy, as a means to activate repopulation or as personal solutions for dowry or dynastic succession problems.
They generally gathered large patrimonies, many times in the form of donations in exchange for the guarantee of the souls salvation. The monastic origins in Aragón date back to the Visigothic period, and, above all, to Carolingian times. The Muslim invasion partially stopped their activity, mainly with Almanzors raids in the 10th century. But with the later Christian advances the monasteries reappeared again in the 11th century, thanks to the influence of the Cluny order. After Ramiro Is reform, most of the foundations took place.
Among the oldest monuments are San Pedro de Siresa, with a western wing of post-Carolingian tradition, and San Juan de la Peña, with Mozarabic architectural remains. Nevertheless both of them were mainly completed following the Romanesque style.
In Aragón, monastic architecture, with a complex structure of rooms organized around a central cloister, will not reach its complete expression until the introduction of the Cistercian order, with the important male monasteries of Veruela, Piedra and Rueda, and female, like Sigena, founded in 1188.
The mendicant orders are represented in Aragón by the Franciscan and Preachers monasteries, with an architecture that follows either the Gothic or the Mudejar style.
The Carthusian monasteries are not introduced in Aragón until the Modern Age.
