CARNIVALS of Bielsa

Carnivals of Bielsa

During Carnival, for three days.

This is an anthropological festivity with high popular participation and full of symbolism. Its origin is to be traced in the remote past. The trangas are young people wearing colourful skirts and shirts, with their heads and backs covered with a sheep skin and big horns, the face painted in black, wearing teeth made of potato and a cowbell hanging from their waists. They symbolize fertility. They hold the tranga with which they beat the floor. The madamas are young single girls with a skirt decorated with bows and colourful ribbons. They symbolize purity. Other characters are el amontato, el caballet, los goluchos, las garretas and el Cornelio, a figure representing Carnival that is burnt on the last day.
