ROUTE OF THE CASTLES IN ARAGON : DAROCA

Daroca. Zaragoza

98 km. from Zaragoza. It is an enormous fortified ensemble surrounded by walls built between the 13th and the 16th centuries and almost completely conserved. Two defensive doors are remarkable: the lower door, remodelled in the 16th century and having two quadrangular towers; and the upper door, transformed in the 17th century. These doors are located in the two main entrances to the city. Besides, there are other doors, like the Valencia door or the Mudejar door of San Martín de Parra.

There were three castles in Daroca: el Mayor (the bigger), the castle of the Judería (Jewish quarter) and that of San Cristobal (also known as the Andador tower the Walker-). The vast ruins of the Mayor castle mingle with the eroded hill dominated by the Collegiate church. It has oval plan, about 80x30 metres, being its main element a rectangular tower of mortar and masonry and a pointed arch. Of the castle of San Cristobal (13th-14th C.) only the tower of el Andador (the Walker) has been conserved. The castle of the Judería is in ruins as well. Among the civil buildings the house of the Luna family, from the 15th century stands out, as well as the Jewish quarter, with an ensemble of Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the 16th and the 17th centuries. Among the religious buildings the Collegiate church of Santa María (National Monument), San Juan Bautista, Santo Domingo de Silos (National Monument) and the church of San Miguel (National Monument).
